Qualified for Junior Worlds

New Zealand's Junior track cycling team returns to world stage.

Cycling New Zealand today named a 13-strong team to contest the UCI Track Cycling Junior World Championships to be held in Israel from 23-27 August.

"The women’s endurance group is led by outstanding Canterbury 17-year-old, Amelia Sykes, who won five titles at the recent national championships in Cambridge. The Avonside College rider won individual titles in the omnium, time trial, individual pursuit, the elimination and points race." Read more from Cycling NZ.

My first Elite Track Nationals was highly successful as I achieved a podium place in seven out of eight events I competed in, this included three national titles and ANOTHER New Zealand Record in the 2000m individual pursuit.

It has been a very memorable couple of years for me in track cycling and one of my most special achievements was breaking the nine-year-old Canterbury record, the U19 woman’s 500mTT on my home velodrome at Denton Park.

The Vantage Criterium National Championships was my third time racing a criterium. From the moment I got on the rollers to the moment I crossed the finish line, I was very nervous. It took me a couple of corners on the first lap before I flew around them properly. It was a very smooth and challenging course, with tight corners, to long windy straights. It always feels better having it in your hometown, though I do enjoy travelling around New Zealand for other races as well.
